Metro Dance – New Offerings

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

***Note MetroDance’s exciting new location:  2864 Franklin Street, Avondale Estates, GA 30002***

If you haven’t yet been to Metro Dance studios, you’re missing out.  They’re changing the face of Dance (with a capital “D”) to something much friendlier, safer, and easier to access for kids and adults alike.   Founder, Tricia Mashburn Bowers, shows each student how the benefits of dance training can extend outside the studio into all parts of one’s life.

In addition to the lively roster of dance classes, they’ve teamed up now with Avondale Playhouse.  Now, kids as young as 3 can be introduced to creative drama and all the fun that the age of pretend can be.  They’re co-hosting Cool Grooves, too — a class just for boys to help express creativity (and burn off lots of energy!)

Please visit their website at www.metrodanceavondale.com or see the schedule at www.clickaclass.com – and go visit the studio soon!

No Child Left Behind: Back on the playground?

Monday, March 15th, 2010

I saw an interview this morning with our current Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan.  He says the reforms to the No Child Left Behind Act will include expanding the school subjects covered, and that physical education will be back in school curriculum plans.   Since NCLB began, schools have been winnowing down students’ “non-essential” subjects — meaning, subjects that didn’t score on the NCLB tests — and many believe this has contributed to the epidemic of childhood obesity.

Will the reforms really get kids back to the playground and back to gym class?   Time will tell.  This is not the aspect that proponents are touting the loudest, but it may be one of the most important.  Allowing playtime (structured or not) for students is a critical step in improving childrens’ health and well-being, and even their ability to learn the “real” subjects.

Agree?  Disagree?  What’s your take on it?
